Expressionism is artistic style in which the image is distorted or simplified to “express” the artist’s emotional and psychological reaction to the subject matter rather than depict objective reality. It uses intense colors and dynamic, spontaneous elements. Expressionism can refer to any style of art but typically refers to modern German art which was a cultural movement that challenged traditional bourgeois art.
