Mannerism (also referred to as “late Renaissance”) describes an artistic style and movement of late 16th and early 17th century Europe. It  employed a stylized, exaggerated approach to painting and sculpture,  emphasizing artifice, elegance and refinement over realistic depiction. It used illogical compression of space, deliberate distortion, and elongated figures.
